Cheek Lift

The cheeks are a crucial component of an attractive face. However, the first signs of aging are often displayed in the cheek region. As we grow older, the fatty tissue that normally drapes over the cheekbones and jawline can start to sag or drop. This produces deep nasolabial folds (or grooves between the nose and mouth), sunken cheeks, jowls, and an indistinct jawline. In essence, the face loses its youthful, heart-shaped contour and becomes more square shaped and jowly with age. Sagging cheek fat pads, skin and soft tissues affects the appearance of the lower cheek and jowls as well as the lower eyelids. Drooping cheek tissues, along with protrusion of fat from around the eye, creates under eye puffiness or bags and leads to sad or tired appearance. Dr. Stong is a highly esteemed facial plastic surgeon with unrivaled techniques in addressing sagging skin of the cheeks, including the jowls and midface, and restoring the cheeks to a more youthful position.

The cheeks can be lifted with a multitude of procedures. However, the deep plane facelift and the endoscopic midface lift are the most favorable techniques to restore youthfulness and attractiveness to cheeks. Using an endoscopic facelift approach, the midface lift involves fewer incisions and less scarring than facelift surgery. However, it does not address the jowls, jawline, or neck like a facelift. The midface lift is ideal for younger patients with drooping upper cheeks and minimal aging in the lower cheeks and neck.

A deep plane facelift is more beneficial for those that need improvement in the upper and lower cheeks as well as the neck. Dr. Stong is among an elite group of surgeons who performs a deep plane technique, which allows the midface to be effectively addressed during facelift surgery.

Depending on a patient’s specific concerns, a midface lift can be combined with other facial plastic surgery techniques such as buccal fat pad transposition, lower eyelid blepharoplasty, brow lift or neck lift.

Dr. Stong is a dual board certified facial plastic surgeon who uses the most revolutionary techniques in cosmetic surgery. His distinguished skill and reputable results inspire confidence in patients who wish to undergo a cheek lift or other cosmetic procedures of the neck and face.

Cheek Lift FAQs

What is a cheek lift?

Using minimally invasive cheek lift techniques with limited incisions, sagging cheek tissue can be lifted to restore a more prominent youthful contour to both the upper and lower cheeks. A cheek lift can soften nasolabial folds, improve jowling and restore a clean jawline and neck.

Patients who have isolated aging in the midface but do not have excess heaviness in the jowls or loose skin in the neck may benefit most from an endoscopic midface lift. Such patients are typically younger and want to accentuate their upper cheeks. It is an excellent solution that involves well-concealed incisions in the hairline and natural-looking results.

Depending on a patient’s unique areas of concern and the specific region of the face that needs to be addressed, Dr. Stong can implement targeted cheek lift techniques, including an upper check lift, lower cheek or jowl lift or cheek/neck lift using either endoscopic or deep plane facelift methods.

What is a midface lift or upper cheek lift?

A midface lift is generally performed with endoscopic technique using small and limited incisions that are well hidden in the scalp. This approach includes repositioning of the deep fat pads in the midface (melolabial fat pads) over the cheeks. It softens smiles lines and nasolabial folds and restores a heart-shaped contour to the face. Sometimes a buccal fat pad transposition is combined with a midface lift to add additional volume to the midface during the procedure. An upper cheek lift can incorporate an eyelid lift and/or brow lift to rejuvenate the entire area surrounding the eyes and upper cheeks.

What is a lower cheek or jowl lift?

For patients who have heaviness in the lower cheeks and jowls, a facelift can produce the most dramatic and long-term results. Dr. Stong uses the deep plane facelift technique, which gives patients the added benefit of lifting the upper cheeks or midface as well as the neck skin. Dr. Stong specializes in advanced deep plane facelift techniques, a revolutionary approach that repositions sagging soft tissues of the cheek without tension or unnatural tightness across the midface. A lower cheek and jowl lift is standard to most facelift methods, but the deep plane facelift can give patients a very natural and rejuvenated look across the upper cheeks, lower cheeks and jaw line.

Is a cheek lift part of a neck lift?

In general, an endoscopic cheek lift does not address sagging skin or the fat of the lower cheeks and neck area. However, Dr. Stong performs a deep plane facelift to successfully restore both of these regions with a single procedure. The deep plane facelift is the only procedure that lifts the upper and lower cheeks as well as the neck effectively. Other traditional facelift procedures may lift the lower cheeks and neck, but do not successfully address the midface.

How do I know which cheek lift technique is right for me?

During a cheek lift consultation, Dr. Stong will perform a thorough examination of your face and take several factors into consideration, such as how the upper, middle, and lower parts of your face contribute to your aging appearance. Based on these factors as well as your unique goals for surgery, Dr. Stong will recommend a specific cheek lift technique.

What is the healing process for cheek lifts?

Most patients experience minimal discomfort after a stand-alone cheek lift procedure. Discoloration is marginal and most swelling is improved within a week. It may take several weeks for swelling to completely resolve. You should be able to return to work and social activities within 7-10 days.

Is a cheek lift the same thing as a facelift?

A cheek lift is not necessarily the same as a facelift. The main difference between a traditional facelift and cheek lift surgery is the areas that are targeted to restore the volume and youthful curves of the cheeks for a fuller, more youthful appearance.

A facelift rejuvenates both the lower cheeks and neck with techniques to lift and tighten sagging skin and the SMAS in both of these regions. Patients who have neck banding, deep nasolabial folds, and prominent marionette lines should consider a deep plane facelift instead of an endoscopic cheek lift. An endoscopic midface lift is best for patients who have isolated sagging or laxity in the upper cheeks without concerns in the lower cheeks and neck region.
