Ear pain and clogged ears concept

You can often repair a torn, split, or stretched earlobe with a simple outpatient procedure. The right approach depends on whether your piercing hole has widened over time, your lobe has torn, gauges have stretched the tissue, or scar tissue has changed its shape.

At Kalos Facial Plastic Surgery in Buckhead, we help repair earlobes affected by heavy earrings, accidental pulls, misplaced piercings, gauges, or old scars. Dr. Benjamin C. Stong brings dual board certification and focused facial reconstructive training to every procedure, making sure shape, symmetry, and your future piercing plans are all considered.

Why Do Earlobes Tear or Stretch?

Your earlobes are made of soft tissue without any cartilage for support. A sudden tug can split a pierced lobe, and years of heavy earrings may slowly stretch the opening until your jewelry doesn’t sit right anymore. Gauges can leave a larger opening or change the lower edge of your lobe.

Both sudden trauma and years of heavy earrings can cause split earlobes. The best repair depends on how much tissue remains, where the tear is, and whether your lobe has been repaired before.

What Happens During Earlobe Repair?

Dr. Stong performs earlobe repair surgery as an outpatient procedure using local anesthesia. He removes the healed skin around the tear or enlarged opening, reshapes the tissue, and closes the edges with sutures.

Your repair plan may change based on:

  • A partial tear versus a complete split
  • A stretched piercing versus a larger gauged opening
  • The amount and thickness of tissue that remains
  • Unevenness between the two ears
  • Prior repairs, keloids, or other scar concerns

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons notes that ear surgery can address changes caused by injury. For earlobe repair, the aim is to rebuild a stable border and improve the lobe’s shape without promising perfect symmetry or an invisible scar.

Can Gauged Earlobes Be Repaired?

In many cases, yes. Gauged lobes often need more reshaping than a simple piercing tear, since the opening usually involves more stretched skin. How much contour we can restore depends on the tissue you have left.

If your lobe is very thin, uneven, or has been repaired before, Dr. Stong may recommend a different closure or talk through any limits before surgery. An in-person exam gives us a much clearer idea than gauge size alone.

Can You Pierce Your Ears Again?

You can often consider piercing your ears again after your repair has healed, but timing and placement need to be personalized. Piercing through a fresh scar or wearing heavy earrings too soon can put new stress on your lobe.

We’ll check your healing and let you know when it’s safe to pierce again. Your new piercing may need to be placed away from the original repair line.

FAQs About Earlobe Repair

Will earlobe repair leave a scar?

Yes. Any surgical repair will leave a scar, but careful closure and good aftercare can help it heal so it’s less noticeable.

Does every torn earlobe use the same repair?

No. A partial tear, complete split, gauged opening, or old scar may each need a different closure approach.
