If you’re unhappy with your upper lip, it’s easy to assume more filler is the answer. Sometimes it is. Other times, the issue is the position or length of the upper lip, and that calls for a different conversation.
At Kalos Facial Plastic Surgery in Atlanta, we offer both injectable fillers and lip lift surgery, including Dr. Benjamin C. Stong’s Perialar Multivector Lip Lift™. Dr. Stong will examine your lip shape, upper lip length, smile, and filler history before recommending the option that best fits your goals.
What Does Lip Filler Do?
Lip filler adds volume. It can help shape the lip border, soften mild asymmetry, and give the lips a fuller look without surgery.
The FDA has approved certain dermal fillers for lip augmentation in adults 22 and older. Fillers are temporary, which can be helpful if you want flexibility before considering surgery.
Filler can be a good fit when the main concern is volume. It doesn’t shorten the space between the nose and upper lip, so adding more filler may not fix a long upper lip.
What Does a Lip Lift Do?
A lip lift changes upper lip position by shortening the distance between the lips and the bottom of the nose. It can make the upper lip look fuller by revealing more of the red lip instead of adding injectable volume.
A lip lift may also improve upper tooth show and help the upper lip look less tucked under. It may be a better conversation if your upper lip looks long, flat, or out of proportion. Since a lip lift is surgery, incision placement, swelling, healing, and scar planning need careful attention.
How Do You Know If Upper Lip Length Is the Problem?
You may think you need more filler when the real issue is where the upper lip sits. Signs can include:
- Your upper lip still looks thin after filler
- Your upper teeth barely show when you smile
- The space between your nose and upper lip looks long
- Filler starts to look heavy instead of balanced
- Your upper lip seems to turn inward with age
How Is the Perialar Multivector Lip Lift™ Different?
Traditional subnasal or “bullhorn” lip lifts mainly shorten the center of the upper lip. Kalos’ Perialar Multivector Lip Lift™ is designed to look beyond the center alone.
Dr. Stong evaluates how the upper lip sits across the full smile, including tooth show, red lip visibility, and balance around the nose and midface. That planning helps us decide whether lip lift surgery, filler, or a staged combination makes sense.
FAQs About Lip Lift vs. Lip Filler
Can filler fix a long upper lip?
Filler can add volume, but it doesn’t shorten the distance between the nose and upper lip. If upper lip length is the main issue, a lip lift may be part of the conversation.
Can you combine a lip lift and filler?
Yes, some patients may choose a conservative filler after healing from a lip lift for added volume or refinement. Others only need filler or only need surgery.
