How Can I Reduce Side Effects from Injectables?

Woman during facial injectable treatment.

Cosmetic injectables like Botox®, facial fillers, biologics, Kybella® and more are quick and non-invasive treatments. In most cases, the common side effects are from the injection, not the injectable. After cosmetic injections, many people experience redness, swelling, bruising or itching at the injection site. Here are some tips to reduce these side effects for a quicker and more comfortable recovery.

Ice Compress

Gently applying a cold or ice compress to the injection area can relieve any tenderness and help dissipate swelling. You can apply a compress (not direct ice) to the area for 5-10 minutes every hour the first few days.

Avoid Heat, Alcohol and Strenuous Activity for 24 hours

Cosmetic injections do not require downtime or recovery, but you should avoid some activities and exposure. Heat, strenuous activity and alcohol can increase the chance of bruising – avoid direct sun, hot showers and alcoholic beverages for at least one day.

Do Not Rub the Area

Fillers and neuromodulators can be moved or molded after the injection. Avoid rubbing or massaging the area for 1-2 days with neuromodulators (Botox, Dysport®, etc.) and 1-2 weeks with facial fillers (Juvederm®, Restylane®, etc.). Those who receive lip fillers should avoid using a straw or smoking/vaping for at least 24 hours, as the pressure can mold the filler in the lips.

Sleep with Head Elevated

Elevating your head for the first few days after your procedure can help reduce bruising and swelling at the injection sites. Try to avoid sleeping on your face to reduce molding or moving injectables.

Choose an Experienced Injector

One of the best ways to avoid unnecessary bruising is by choosing a highly experienced injector like Dr. Benjamin Stong. Dr. Stong offers bruise-free injections by using micro and blunt-tip cannulas and his advanced injection techniques. This decreases the risk of injury to the blood vessels, which results in a low risk of bruising.

By following the post-care instructions, you can avoid much of the bruising, swelling and redness from your cosmetic injectables.
