How to Best Prepare for Rhinoplasty Surgery

If you are considering rhinoplasty, often known as nose job surgery, you might have questions regarding how to best prepare for the process so that you are in tip-top shape before, during and after the procedure.

Do’s Before Rhinoplasty:

Set up a cozy resting area. You will feel exhausted and queasy after rhinoplasty due to the anesthetics administered during the procedure. So, setting up a warm, comfortable place with everything you will need ahead of time is crucial.

Get plenty of sleep. One week before surgery, it is critical to get enough sleep because your body will need extra energy to heal and recover after the procedure. It is also advised to take a few days off work to prepare for the operation. Additionally, it would help if you got in the habit of sleeping on your back because you will need to sleep on your sides for one or two weeks after the surgery.

Stay hydrated. The body performs better at the cellular level when you drink lots of water. Therefore, double the amount of water you typically consume.

Confirm your driver. Since you will not be able to drive after the operation, arrange for someone to drive you to and from the hospital.

Arrange care for 24 hours. On the first day of recovery, it is recommended that someone stays with you to help with your care and ensure your safety.

Pre-cook meals in bulk. You may find it challenging to prepare meals during the first weeks of your recovery, so you should batch-cook and freeze food before your rhinoplasty. This allows you to thaw or microwave your meal quickly.

Furthermore, it is recommended that you prepare soft, nutritious dishes that are easy to chew due to possible discomfort when opening and closing your mouth widely. However, remember that protein is crucial, as it can help accelerate healing and recovery.

Do Not’s Before Rhinoplasty:

Do not consume alcohol. Avoid drinking alcohol in the week leading up to your surgery. Alcohol will cause you to become dehydrated, weaken your immune system and slow your recovery process. Instead, find other ways to relax during the week before surgery.

Do not smoke. Avoid smoking cigarettes or vaping during your pre- and post-operative week.

Avoid certain drugs and supplements. Some blood-thinning medications and herbal supplements can cause complications with anesthesia or bleeding. Therefore, avoid aspirin, B vitamins, vitamins K, E and C, fish oils, ginger, ginkgo, ginseng, cayenne, green tea, garlic and flaxseed supplements for two weeks before rhinoplasty surgery.

Limit sun exposure. Avoid spending much time in the sun before and after your surgery. UV rays can cause skin damage and slow the healing process.

Avoid food and water before surgery. Do not consume any food or liquids after 12 am the night before your operation or on the morning of your surgery.
