As they say, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” Unfortunately, we are usually our own worst critic. Facial aging is an inevitable process that affects all of us, and there’s an ever-increasing focus on youthful appearances. Opting to undergo facial plastic surgery can not only provide a younger looking appearance but also makes a person feel better about how they look, improve their overall quality of life, and give them confidence they may have been lacking.
In today’s society, cosmetic surgeries are not only sought by the rich and famous, but are becoming increasingly popular among the middle class. It’s believed that people are not only undergoing cosmetic facial surgeries strictly for an improvement in appearance, but also because going under the knife provides patients with a higher self-confidence. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the number of cosmetic surgeries performed in the United States has increased by an average of 5% every year. Some of the most popular procedures include rhinoplasty, facelifts, blepharoplasty, and other facial rejuvenation techniques like Botox and fillers.
Because of the increase in the amount of people seeking facial cosmetic procedures, many doctors are offering a wider variety of services including lasers and ultrasound technologies. These newer, nonsurgical methods of skin rejuvenation and tightening, can improve texture and tone, help clear acne, promote collagen production, and reduce wrinkles. These techniques work well for people who are beginning to see the signs of aging and aren’t quite ready for surgery. Additionally, these nonsurgical procedures are no substitute for surgery, and unusually only achieve a fraction of surgical results. To be clear, there are no short cuts in this industry and preventative/maintenance procedures help delay the aging process to maintain a youthful appearance for as long as possible, but generally do not achieve the dramatic results of surgery. Many people are starting neuromuscular relaxants like Botox in their 20’s as a preventative measure. The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery recently reported that 28% of facial plastic surgeons have seen an increase in patients under the age of 25 opting for injectables or cosmetic procedures.
When a person chooses to undergo facial plastic surgery to improve their self image, there are a number of different aspects that they should consider, including seeking an experienced and board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, making sure that patients are appropriate candidates for procedures while selecting appropriate surgical procedures that can help them reach their goals, and of course becoming fully aware with everything that their procedures entail.
