What Causes Eye Bags and How Can They Be Removed?

Satified mature woman looking at her face in a mirror.

Puffy bags of skin under the eyes are common when you are tired. When you do not get enough sleep, the skin becomes thin and dehydrated under the eye, with fluid collecting around the eyelids. The dark circles and puffy skin usually go away when you finally get the rest you need, but what if they are a constant feature? If you have permanent eye bags, it may be caused by a variety of reasons and may require treatment or surgery for removal.

Causes of Undereye Bags

The delicate skin under the eyes can change for a variety of reasons. Sleeping too little or too much can make the eyes puffy, as can illness, crying, allergies or stress. Most puffiness is fluid that collects under the skin and makes these temporary bags. Permanent eye bags are usually fatty tissue which will not go away with rest or medication.

Aging is the most common cause of permanent eye bags. The skin under the eyes becomes thinner and loses elasticity. The fat tissue can droop and sag, while the hollows under the eye become deeper, making the bags more pronounced. However, some people have this appearance in their younger years due to genetics or other conditions.

Treatments for Removing Eye Bags

The deepened hollows under the eyes often contribute to the appearance of undereye bags. For many people with a perpetual tired or older appearance from eye bags, dermal fillers can be the solution. Filling in the tear troughs or adding filler in the upper cheeks can smooth the transition from under the eyes to the cheek. While the results are temporary, they are almost instant and can quickly help the face appear more energetic or youthful.

For permanent eye bag removal, a lower blepharoplasty, or eyelid lift, can be performed. This procedure can remove excess skin and fat that create the puffy eye bags through a small incision inside the eyelid. Once the skin is tightened, the eyes look refreshed and youthful for years to come.

If you have permanent eye bags that are making you look exhausted and older, consider eye bag removal. Contact our team at Kalos Facial Plastic Surgery in Atlanta, GA to schedule a cosmetic consultation with Dr. Stong to discuss your treatment options.
